Carlos DuPre Moseley

SPARTANBURG, SC—Carlos DuPré Moseley, 98, of Spartanburg, SC died on October 1, 2012 at his home. Mr. Moseley was born September 21, 1914, in Laurens, South Carolina, the son of Helen DuPré Moseley and Carlos Roland Moseley, and grandson of Daniel Allston DuPré, a Wofford College professor for more than 50 years. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University in 1935. Mr. Moseley spent many years working with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as its Managing Director, President, and Chairman of the Board. His tenure saw the most sweeping change and growth in the Philharmonic’s history. He also appeared as piano soloist with a number of symphony orchestras under such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Eric Leinsdorf, Gerard Schwarz, Mehli Mehta, and Aldo Ceccato. Among the orchestras he performed with were the New York Philharmonic, the American Youth Orchestra, and the Savannah Symphony. Additionally, he performed many recitals in both the United States and France. Mr. Moseley is survived by his sister, Cynthia Elizabeth Moseley and was predeceased by his brother, Daniel DuPré Moseley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Converse College Petrie School of Music, Wofford College Department of Music, the Episcopal Church of the Advent, or the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on October 8, 2012 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent. A private burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
