Lucy Harper Grier

Lucy Harper Grier Spartanburg- Lucy Harper Grier, age 83, of 611 Crystal Drive, Spartanburg, died July 8, 2012 at her home. Born on June 6, 1929, Lucy was a native of Lenoir, NC and was a daughter of the late Captain James Cunningham and Charlotte Critz Harper. She attended Salem Academy in 1947 and was a graduate of Salem College, class of 1951. Lucy moved to Spartanburg after graduation and taught Harp lessons at Converse College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Lucy was also a member of the Fortnightly Garden Club, Tome and Tare Garden Club and the Assembly. Lucy is survived by three children, James Harper Grier and his wife, Cassi of Spartanburg, SC, Mary Grier Wheless and her husband, Buddy of Raleigh, NC and Charlotte Grier Gee and her husband, William of Spartanburg, SC. Seven grandchildren, James Calvin Mathew Grier, Laurence Harper Grier, Alexander Presnell Gee, Lucy Harper Gee and William Grier Gee, all of Spartanburg SC, James Block Wheless III and William Harper Wheless of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Charlotte Harper Stone, (Sissy), and husband, George of Spartanburg, SC; one brother, James Cunningham Harper Jr. and wife, Eleanor of Lenoir, NC. She is also survived by nine nieces and nephews. Lucy was predeceased by a brother, George Finley Harper. The family deeply appreciates the compassionate care by Emily Atchison and the staff of Integrys. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 11:00 am, in the First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary conducted by Dr. Thomas E. Evans, Dr. William L. Arthur and Rev. Ansley B. Page. Interment will be private. In remembrance of Lucy, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Columbarium Fund, 393 E Main St, Spartanburg SC 29302, Duke Eye Center, DUMC 3802, Durham NC 27710, or charity of one’s choice.
