Canon City, CO- Charlie George Brown, 62, husband of Laurel Swarbrick Brown, died Thursday, November 29, 2012. Charlie was the son of the late John Ashmore Brown, Sr. and Bobbie Simmons Brown. A 1968 graduate of Spartanburg High School, he attended Farrier and Blacksmithing School in Greenville, NC. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Charlie was a member of SAG (the Screen Actors Guild), and formerly the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and the Cowboy Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. An accomplished dancer, he was co-founder of the Southern California Western Swing Association. He was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church of Canon City, CO, involved in several Bible Studies, and was a mainstay of their Handyman Ministry, repairing homes for the sick, elderly, and disabled. A skilled craftsman, Charlie was known for his woodworking and furniture building, and the custom bits and spurs he made for many years. His lifelong love of horses and the American west led to his moving to Colorado in the 1970s. He worked in rodeo and ranching for many years, until he had an opportunity to begin acting in the 1990s. Primarily a commercial actor, Charlie appeared in over 15 national commercials and worked behind the scenes in many movies. Charlie was an avid fly-fisherman and skier and was most happy in the outdoors. He was instrumental in providing access for handicapped fishermen at the Canon City Riverwalk. A man of deep and profound faith, he is remembered for his kind and generous spirit, positive attitude, strength of character, his wit and story-telling, and love of family and friends. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brothers, John Ashmore (Pamela H.) Brown, Jr. of Columbia SC, Robert (Sandra M.) Brown of Spartanburg, SC; nephews, Derek and Zach Brown; a niece, Rebecca Brown; and great-nephews, Payton and Ethan Brown. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jo Griffin Brown. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2nd, at 4pm at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Spartanburg, led by the Rev. Robert L. Brown and the Rev. John Ashmore Brown, Jr. The family will receive friends after the service in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Matthew’s Food Pantry, 101 St. Matthew’s Ln, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
