Margaret Poole Littlejohn

Spartanburg - Margaret Poole Littlejohn passed from this life on Thursday, January 31 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice with her two children by her side. She was born at home in Enoree, SC on February 24, 1928, the younger of two daughters, the children of Everett James Poole and Clara McMeekin Poole. She was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church in Enoree where she was a faithful member throughout her youth. She graduated from Laurens High school in 1945 and with honors from Limestone College in 1950 where she was elected May Queen in her Senior Year. She taught high school English and French serving in Greenwood, Orangeburg, Georgetown and finally Spartanburg where she married Broadus Richard Littlejohn, Jr. on October 6, 1956. From that time forward, she was a committed member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, being a choir member for 50 years in addition to her work in the Women's Missionary Union and her participation in the Half Note Sunday School Class. Her most outstanding contribution was as a dedicated wife and mother, yet her service extended far beyond her home. She was a trustee of Limestone College from 1975 until the present and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service there in 1995. She was also awarded Philanthropist of the Year by the college in 2009. In addition to her service to her family, church, and college she was involved in many aspects of her community, being a longtime member of the Cema Chreitzberg Garden Club, the Junior League, the Music Club of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Debutante Club, Mobile Meals Volunteer and Board member of the Arts Council and Georgia Cleveland Nursing Home. Furthermore, for many years she faithfully supported her husband in the management of Community Cash Stores and had great affection for the many people who worked there. She is survived by her son Broadus Richard Littlejohn, III and his wife, Beth, her daughter Anne Littlejohn Gowan and her husband Tim. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Lizabeth Hope Eifert, William Bradford Littlejohn, Julie Kristin Snider, Ansley Kay Gowan, Matthew Benjamin Littlejohn, and Emily Caroline Littlejohn as well as 4 great grandchildren with a fifth one on the way; her nephew Dr. Everett Fuller and her niece Susan Hinrichs. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years and her sister Elizabeth Poole Fuller. The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg from 5:00 PM -7:00 PM on Monday, February 4, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers: Scott Camp, Ellis Eifert, Dr. Everett Fuller, Tom Hinrichs, Brad Littlejohn, Matthew Littlejohn, William B. Littlejohn, Jr., Nathan Snider. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Margaret Littlejohn Scholarship Fund at Limestone College: 1115 College Dr., Gaffney, SC 29340, Mobile Meals: PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304, or First Baptist Church of Spartanburg: 250 East Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family will be at her home.
