Spartanburg, SC- James T. “Tom” Hindman, Jr., MD, died on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Dr. Hindman, born on November 5, 1950, in Spartanburg, SC was the son of the late James Thomas Hindman and Margaret Lowe Hindman. Dr. Hindman was a 1969 graduate of Spartanburg High School; he was a National Merit Semi-finalist, and a member of the All-State Orchestra. Dr. Hindman studied violin with the late Peggy Gignilliat for many years. He was an Eagle Scout, member of the Order of the Arrow, and Troop 1 of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. An avid tennis player, Dr. Hindman played on the tennis team while attending the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Science and Mathematics. After serving as the first Executive Director of The Center for Exceptional Children in Fairfield County, SC, Dr. Hindman returned to school attending the University of South Carolina School Of Pharmacy. He was a member of the inaugural class inducted into Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society and a member of Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society. Earning his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1984, Dr. Hindman completed an internship in Internal Medicine and his residency in Anesthesiology from the Medical University of South Carolina Teaching Hospitals. Dr. Hindman served as a Staff Physician at Self Memorial Hospital, Catawba Valley Medical Center, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and Mary Black Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Spartanburg County Medical Society, and the South Carolina Medical Association. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Margaret Everhart Hindman; and daughters, Margaret Ellen Hindman (Ellie), and Mary Elizabeth Hindman (Lizzie). The family will be at the home. Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday, May 11th at the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, SC, by The Reverend J. Edward Morris and The Reverend Stephen Y. McGehee. Visitation will be held immediately following the service in the Parish and Community Life Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, P O Box 3466, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
