Florence, SC- Robert Henry Walden, 99, formerly of Spartanburg, died at Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence, SC on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
Born January 10, 1914 in Moore, he was the son of the late James Henry Walden, Sr. and Virginia Gates Walden, and was married for 64 years to the late Annie Lou Wingo of Moore. After graduating from Woodruff High School in 1931, he attended Wofford College, graduating in 1935. During WWII, he served in the army and attained the rank of captain. After leaving the army he returned to Spartanburg where he worked with the US Postal Service until his retirement. During his retirement, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking, achieving a reputation for fine craftsmanship, originality, and attention to detail. Robert was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Roebuck, SC and was a member of the Cavins Masonic Lodge in Woodruff for almost 75 years. In 2007 he moved to the Independent Living section of the Methodist Manor to be with his sister, Catherine and her husband, Elder Jones. Robert called the Manor home for almost 6 years and was well thought of by both the residents and the staff. His family wishes to express their profound gratitude for the care and warm personal attention he received while at the Manor. We would also like to thank McLeod Hospice for the excellent care that they provided Robert.
Robert is survived by his sister in-law, Deloris Pritchard and her husband, Paul; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Annie Lou, who died in 2004, he is predeceased by two brothers, John F. Walden and James H. Walden, Jr.; and his sisters, Thelma W. Watson and Catherine W. Jones.
A graveside service will be held Monday, July 1st, 10:30am, at Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery, officiated by Reverend Jim Oliver.
