Erika H. "Hedi" Bolliger-Altorfer

March 26, 1937 — September 28, 2013

Spartanburg- Hedi Bolliger, faithful wife of Markus Bolliger for over 53 years, died peacefully Saturday, September 28, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born March 26, 1937 in Zurich, Switzerland, she was the daughter of the late Jules Altorfer and late Sophie Altorfer-Brunner. She graduated from Zürich Business College, with Post-Graduate College Training in Lausanne Switzerland, London England and Florence Italy. Her language skills served her well at the Swiss Headquarters of Siemens Corporation, Lausanne, as well as in the family business. Once in Spartanburg, she attended Spanish, Music & Art Classes at Converse College as a student of its Converse II Program. Hedi was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg since 1965, serving, in her quiet and warm manner, many ageing members of the Congregation. She was a dedicated Mobile Meals Volunteer for over 20 years. She also served as a tutor in the AWARE Program. As a member of the Wednesday Study Club Hedi enjoyed the friendship, camaraderie and educational opportunities it afforded her. She herself presented many well researched programs over the years. Hedi loved music as a constant companion, having been an accomplished piano player in her younger years. And she had a lifelong interest in Health Enrichment Issues. Her two sons, Christian Markus, who predeceased her in 2004, and Stephan Max could not have wished for a more dedicated, conscientious and loving mother. The families of Hedi’s twin sister Trudi Steiger-Altorfer and her sister-in-law Doris Altorfer-Rappold as well as all her numerous relatives and friends in Switzerland, Brazil, and the USA mourn her passing. Hedi was predeceased by her brother Werner Altorfer in May 2013. Hedi moved to the United States with Markus in September 1960 and some 2 years later, moved south to Spartanburg, SC. Their warm reception by, and love for, people there and other areas of the States, spurred them to become US citizens in May 1972. A Celebration of her life will be held in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 4 PM, conducted by Dr. Tom Evans, Dr. Bill Arthur and Rev. Joanne Hull. The Family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Parlor. Hedi will be interred at First Presbyterian Church’s Columbarium upon its completion. The Family is at the home. In remembrance of Hedi, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals, Inc. P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or to Spartanburg Humane Society, Inc., 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
