William S. "Bill" Myers

Spartanburg, SC – William S. “Bill” Myers, 85, a lifetime resident of the Cedar Springs community of Spartanburg, SC, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born May 23, 1928, Mr. Myers was the son of the late S.R. and Normesia Smith Myers, and the brother of the late Virginia M. Myers. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and began his career in management with Colonial Stores. Mr. Myers continued work in the grocery business as the owner and operator of one of Spartanburg’s first convenience stores, Time Saver Food Mart, in Cedar Springs. He maintained the store for more than 20 years. Bill was a current member of Morningside Baptist Church and the Royal Sunday School Class. Prior to joining Morningside, he was an active member of Cedar Spring Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He was also a Mason and a member of Associated Grocers. Mr. Myers loved people and cherished his daily interactions working with members of his community. He also loved his farm and the cattle he tended. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Mae S. McCarley Myers of the home. He is also survived by a daughter, Tammie McCarley Maddock, and her husband, Mike, of Columbia, SC, and their three children; McCarley Elizabeth, Ashley Montgomery, and John Michael, Jr. The role of “Papa” was very special to Bill, and his grandchildren adored him. Also left to cherish special memories are dear friends, Monk and Sylvia Cavendish, and Jackie and Sandy Porterfield of Spartanburg. The family deeply appreciates the kindness of support of the Cavendish and Porterfield families. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 2:00pm at Dunbar Funeral Home Chapel. Services will follow at 3:00pm and be conducted by Dr. Keith Taylor and Dr. James L. Jackson. Interment will be held at Cedar Spring Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the James F. Byrnes Foundation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 6781, Columbia, SC 29260-6781.
