Herbert E. "Hub" Blankenship

March 19, 1925 — February 18, 2014

SPARTANBURG, SC - After 88 years of faithful service to his Lord and Savior, Herbert Eugene Blankenship, Sr., Hub, went peacefully into His arms on February 18, 2014. Hub was born March 19, 1925, to Claude and Thelma Blankenship, in Asheville, NC. Hub served in the US Navy during World War II. He began his career in broadcasting in Gainesville, GA, and was known by his radio personality name, Hub Terry. He continued that career in Columbia, SC as Sports Director of WIS-TV. He was Manager and part-owner of WJOT Radio in Lake City, SC. In 1969, he moved to Spartanburg, SC, as General Manager of WSPA-AM Radio. In 1972, he became the General Manager of the Spartanburg Phillies Baseball Team. Hub began his real estate career in 1976, from which he retired in 2007. He was Realtor of the Year in Spartanburg in 1983. Hub served the Christian community in many capacities: Child Evangelism Fellowship Board Member, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, National Day of Prayer Director, SC Chairman of “Good News for Modern Man” statewide distribution, Media Ministry, Host of “Family Matters” radio show, and well-loved Greeter at Milestones Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Alva; three children: Hub Jr. (Brenda), Sally Lane (Lynn), and Kenn (Mitu); seven grandchildren, Tyler (Katie), Cam, and Kelly Lane, Hub III, Zac, Becklin and Breelyn Blankenship; one brother, Raymond (Gail); one sister, Lorraine. Hub’s life verse was Matthew 6:33, which he lived out with passion. He will be remembered for living a life of gratitude to God, a life of sacrificial love for his wife, an unparalleled example to his children and grandchildren, a life of integrity, humble service and genuine love for all people. Many people talk the talk, but Hub walked out his faith in gentleness and humbleness of heart! A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Milestones Church, Spartanburg. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Kirk Neely, Rev. Dr. Alastair Walker and Rev. Hub Blankenship, Jr. The family will receive friends at 10:00am before the service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tyler, Cam and Kelly Lane, Hub III and Zac Blankenship, and George Bachman. Dunbar Funeral Home is assisting the family.
