Spartanburg, SC- Deloris R. Mullwee passed peacefully from this life on Monday morning, February 24, 2014.
Dr. Mullwee was born on October 24, 1930 in the coal mining hills of Tioga West Virginia, later moving to the Palmetto foot hills of Marietta, South Carolina along with her mother and father. She graduated from Slater Marietta High School in 1949, and received her BA in English from Furman University in 1955, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Prior to her graduation from Furman, she began working as a reporter for the Greenville Piedmont News, earning the State Journalism Award for best short story in 1954. For several years she served as the public relations director for both Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and North Greenville Junior College in Tigerville, SC. From there her education continued as she earned her MA and PhD from the University of South Carolina, writing her dissertation on the works of Thomas Hardy. She served as a professor in the English departments of Limestone College, North Greenville College, Furman University, The University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, and Spartanburg Methodist College. Dr. Mullwee was a brilliant woman, a gifted poet, a talented artist, and a lover of all learning.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Claude Mullwee; her daughter, Lori Mullwee Sealy and husband, Phillip; two grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth Sealy; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 26th, 3:00pm, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by Reverend Timothy Waldrop.
