Spartanburg, SC- Clayton Powell, 74, husband of the late Margaret Sparks Kelly Powell, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 with family by his side.
Born July 28, 1939 in Marietta, SC, Clayton was a son of the late James Edward and Bessie Ellenburg Powell. He was a graduate of Slater Marietta High School in Marietta, SC and received his Associates degree in Business Data Processing at Spartanburg Technical College. Clayton honorably served his country in the US Army. He worked with Clement Lumber Company for 16 years and retired from Christman & Parson after 17 years of service. Clayton was a member of the Roebuck Masonic Lodge 357 and was of the Baptist faith.
Clayton is survived by his step-daughters, Phyl Burgess and her husband, Paul, Jr., of Union, SC; and Marlene Carter and her husband, Joe, of Duncan, SC; four grandchildren, Kelsey Carter of Spartanburg, SC, Kit Carter of Tallahassee, FL, Paul Burgess, III, and Elizabeth Burgess, both of Union, SC; two great grandchildren, Alysa Burgess and Jessica Lee; and two great great grandsons.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Terry and Alvin Powell.
Masonic Rites by Roebuck Masonic Lodge 357 will begin Friday, May 23rd, 12:30pm at Dunbar Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends following Masonic Rites, 1:00-2:00pm.
A funeral service will begin at 2:00pm in the Chapel.
Burial with Military Rites will be held in Union Memorial Gardens, 1720 Whitmire Highway, Union, SC 29379.
