Julia Stockton Walker Smith

Spartanburg, SC- Julia W. Smith, 83, wife of the late James Matthew Smith, Jr., died Saturday, June 21, 2014. Born November 4, 1930 in Charlottesville, VA, Julia was a daughter of the late George Edward and Julia Farish Walker. She grew up in Columbia, SC where she attended the University of South Carolina. While attending college, Julia met her husband of 34 years, Mr. James M. Smith, Jr. She went on to receive her Master of Education from Converse College and became employed with Spartanburg School District 4. Volunteering was something that brought Julia great joy. Over the years, she donated her time as a Grey Lady for Spartanburg General Hospital and a Pink Lady for Mary Black Hospital. Julia taught Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, delivered for Mobile Meals, and was involved in Girl Scouts. She served on the board for the Mental Health Association of Spartanburg, and numerous other organizations. Julia was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, where she also served on the Altar Guild. Julia is survived by three children, James Stockton Smith, his wife, Kella Doolittle Smith, and their children, Mary Katherine Farish Smith, and Elizabeth James Smith; her daughter, Julia Smith Crow and her husband, Roger Dean Crow, and children, William James Kelly, Matthew Cameron Kelly, and Julia Erin Kelly; son, Mark Walker Smith of Naples, FL; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Ladd of Winchester, MA. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her twin sister, Nancy McCracken. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the special caregivers for their help and support over the many years, Norma Ruppe, Candi Moss, Angie Burke, Jeanette Childress, and Tonya Alvarez. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 25th, 10:30am in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by The Reverend J. Edward Morris and The Reverend Stephen Y. McGehee. A reception will follow the service at The Piedmont Club.
