Josephine Mildred "Jo" Barron

Spartanburg, SC- Josephine M. Barron, 88, better known to her friends as Jo Barron, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014. Born January 29, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, Jo was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Guzzimo Porcello. She moved to Spartanburg, SC with her husband, John P. Barron and children, on Christmas Eve of 1965. Jo has had her name stamped on many memorable events, fundraisers, and causes along with many other citizens of Spartanburg, Palmetto Girl’s State, Spartanburg Citizens for Right to Life, Blue Star Mothers, the naming of the PFC Michael Scott Adams Memorial Bridge, past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28, American Legion Building in Duncan Park to the National Historical Register, TOPS #4, Catholic Women’s Club, Blessed Mother Garden at Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, and many political campaigns. She was also the chair person and organizer of The Chocolate Festival. Jo was pro-life, a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, business woman, volunteer, and risk taker. In retirement, her main passion was sailing on pleasure boat cruises. In addition to her husband of 62 years, Jo is survived by her four children, Maryann Morrow, John, Paul, and Joann; brothers, Stanley and John Porcello of New Jersey; sister, Millie Steele of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Robert Lynch and Angela Persson; and four great grandchildren, Alex, Elise, Riley, and Reese. Jo was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Michael Porcello; and one sister, Josephine Porcello. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, August 23rd, 10:00AM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. The family will receive friends in the Parish Center immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 161 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
