Spartanburg, SC- Harrison S. Chapman, age 84, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2014.
Born August 3, 1930 in Martinsville, Virginia, Harrison was a daughter of the late John Armstrong Shackelford, M.D. and Margaret Spencer Shackelford. She moved to Spartanburg in 1950 after her marriage to the late Robert Hett Chapman, Jr.
Harrison graduated from Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C., and attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C. Harrison was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and Wee Kirk Presbyterian Church in Linville, NC. She was dedicated to community service, especially The Spartanburg Regional Foundation, The Boy’s Home, Hatcher Gardens, and the Linville Foundation. Harrison was a member of The Colonial Dames of America, The Junior League of Spartanburg, The Fortnightly Garden Club, Tome and Tare Garden Club, and The Assembly. Most importantly, Harrison was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and the best friend anyone could have.
Harrison is survived by her three children; Robert Hett Chapman III and his wife, Lacy; John Shackelford Chapman and his wife, Lisa; and Sarah Chapman Jackson, all of Spartanburg, S.C.; five grandchildren, Dennis Chapman Hughes and her husband, Brian; Jane Harrison Chapman Fisher and her husband, Ellis; John Shackelford Chapman, Jr.; Harrison Lilian Jackson; and Robert Hett Chapman Jackson; three great grandchildren, Chapman Lee Hughes; Carter Goodwin Hughes; and Lacy Rose Fisher; and her three sisters; Margaret Shackelford Toms and Frances Shackelford Leavitt of Martinsville, Virginia; and Mary Williamson Shackelford Mumford of Dedham, Massachusetts. Harrison is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends, who will dearly miss her.
The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to Harrison’s faithful caregivers, who have helped us all over the past ten years. We would also like to thank Shirley Lipscomb for his dedication to both of our parents. Thank you, also, to the staffs of Eden Terrace, White Oak Estates, and Interim Hospice.
A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, October 30th, 3:00PM in the Sanctuary at The First Presbyterian Church conducted by Reverend Dr. Tom Evans; 393 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
A private family burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. John F. Dunbar, Jr., John E. R. Hayes, James Harper Grier, Marshall Christman Stone, Jr., and Harold Taft Hunt, Jr.
