Spartanburg, SC- Robert Grant Calhoun, 58, husband of Karen Jones Calhoun, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 8, 2015.
Born May 28, 1956 in Munich, Germany, Grant was the son of the late Philip Clare and Isobel Libie Craigs Calhoun. He was reared and educated in Alexandria, Virginia, and was a graduate of Clemson University, class of 1978. Grant was the founder and chairman of Jones-Calhoun Bobcat Equipment in Anderson, SC and most recently served as Commercial Sales Manager of Vic Bailey Ford Lincoln in Spartanburg. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, where he volunteered in several capacities, including youth basketball coach and adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 1. Grant was always engaged in the lives of young people, serving as a volunteer with his children’s schools and as a member of the board of the Girls’ Home of Spartanburg.
A gentle and quiet man, Grant Calhoun was an avid reader who pursued an enduring interest in culture, art, and technology. He is remembered as a loyal and genuine friend, faithful to lifelong associations, and welcoming to all. A deeply devoted husband and father, Grant reveled in his family’s shared activities, including running, golf, travel, and Clemson athletics. He was especially grateful to have been present for the birth of his first grandchild, Mac, on Thanksgiving Day of 2014.
He was the father of three children: his son, Craig Mitchell Calhoun of Charleston, SC; his daughters, Meagan Calhoun Rethmeier and her husband, Elliott Henning Rethmeier, of Winston-Salem, NC, and Mariel Grant Calhoun of Washington, DC. Grant was the grandfather of Mac Calhoun Rethmeier of Winston-Salem, NC. He is also survived by a brother, Craig Stormond Calhoun and his wife, Priscilla Treacy Calhoun, of Alexandria, VA.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 11th, 3:00PM at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, officiated by The Reverend J. Edward Morris and The Reverend Stephen Y. McGehee.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish and Community Life Center.
The family will be at the home.
