Spartanburg, SC- Reiman D. Cannon, Jr., 81, husband of Hazel Marie Danese Cannon, died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Born February 13, 1934 in Jacksonville, FL, Ray was the only child of the late Reiman Duval Cannon, Sr. and Eva Miller Cannon. As a teenager Ray enjoyed roller skating, and he met his bride-to-be there. Hazel and Reiman were married on July 28, 1956 in Jacksonville, FL and had the privilege of celebrating 58 years of marriage.
Ray entered the field of computers in 1954, long before most people knew what a computer was. In 1961 Reiman took a position with Boeing Aircraft, a major contractor on the “Race to the Moon” Space Program in Cape Canaveral Florida, and played a role in the success of the Saturn 5 rocket program.
Ray’s career took his family – that had grown to include four children by 1968 – from Florida to Seattle, Washington, to Spartanburg, South Carolina (the first time: ’69 – ‘79), to Tennessee, to Pennsylvania, to Rock Hill, South Carolina and eventually back to Spartanburg in 1982. Ray remained in the field of computers and project management his entire career, working for familiar names such as Boeing, Milliken, J P Stevens, and Apple until his retirement in 2004.
In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by his sons, Michael Cannon and his wife, Kimberly, of Rock Hill, SC, and Philip Cannon and his wife, Teresa, of Peachtree City, GA; his daughters, Denise Cannon of Spartanburg, SC, and Debra Asberry of Edgewater, MD; six grandchildren, Meghan Howell, Nicole Henderson, McKenzie, Ellen, Murphy, and Chase Cannon; and one great grandchild, Michael Furman Henderson.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 25th, 5:30PM at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, officiated by The Reverend Robert L. Brown.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in The Gallery in the education building.
In remembrance of Ray, memorials may be made to the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church Discretionary Fund, 101 St. Matthew’s Lane, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
