Spartanburg, SC- Kate Holmes Murphy, age 87, wife of the late Ellis Murphy, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015.
Born February 12, 1928 in Atlanta, GA, Kate was the daughter of the late Dr. Walter R. Holmes and Idelle Palmour Holmes. A graduate of Washington Seminary in Atlanta and Bradford Junior College, she was a Phi Mu at the University of Georgia. Kate was a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1960, The Assembly, The Debutante Club of Spartanburg, Tome & Tare Garden Club, and a former member of the Junior League of Spartanburg. For many years, she was active in Girl Scouts as a leader in Atlanta, and as Treasurer and Vice President of Council in Spartanburg.
Kate is survived by a daughter, Peggy Murphy Barnette; four grandchildren, Kris Bell Humphreys and her husband, Preston, of Charlotte, NC, Ellis Murphy Collins Gammons and her husband, Cameron, Emma Barnette, and Walter Barnette, all of Spartanburg; a sister, Mrs. Pope McIntire, III of Atlanta, GA; two nieces, Palmour McIntire Dodd and Sarah Ellen McIntire Love, both of Atlanta, GA; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Murphy Collins; a son, Walter Holmes Murphy; and great granddaughter, Anna Megan Blackwell.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 10th, 2PM in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by The Reverend Scott Alexander Stevenson.
