Stewart Witney Elliott
Spartanburg, SC – Stewart Witney Elliott passed away on Friday, June 5, 2015, after a brief illness. He was 77 years old.
Born in Detroit, Mich. on August 28, 1937, Stewart was the son of James McKinney Elliott and Ella Crawford Heath Elliott. He was predeceased by his one brother, James McKinney Elliott, Jr. who passed away in 2013.
Stewart spent his childhood in Hinsdale, Ill., graduated from Virginia Episcopal School, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the South, in 1960, and later earned a Masters Degree from Converse College. He lived briefly in Richmond, VA, where he was active in the Jaycees and was named Key Man of the Year two years in a row, before settling in Spartanburg in the early 1970s. He remained an intentional and willing servant of the town and its people throughout his life.
Stewart married Anne Elizabeth Mayo in 1977, and the couple had two daughters – Witney Heath Elliott Fisher (Dr. Tim) and Mary Elizabeth Elliott Edwards (Trey). He worked for District 7 for over thirty years as an Educator, Registrar, and Administrative Assistant. He will be remembered fondly by many as the statistician for the Spartanburg Vikings basketball and football programs. Spartanburg High School students will remember Mr. Elliott as the one who called out their name at graduation. He volunteered his time and energy for numerous non-profits, notably St. Luke’s Free Clinic and Mobile Meals. Stewart saw the best in all people, and treated everyone he met with kindness and a smile. He was passionate about education and for over a decade committed himself to the Citizen Scholar program, both as a Board member and a mentor. Stewart encouraged and supported countless students to apply themselves, and to believe in themselves. Stewart loved all sports, mentored numerous students into college, loved spending time with his family, and loved his church, The Episcopal Church of the Advent, at which he served in numerous capacities, from youth basketball coach, youth leader to the Vestry and Stewardship Chairman.
As well as his wife and two daughters, Stewart is survived by five beloved grandchildren; Elizabeth Ammons Edwards, Thomas Harrison Edwards (Toby) and James Henry Edwards, and Elliott McKerchar Fisher (Ellie) and David Heath Fisher.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent officiated by the Reverend Clay H. Turner and Reverend Deborah D. Apoldo. Interment will follow the service in the Cleveland Bell Tower Columbarium with a reception following in the Parrish and Community Life Center.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent Foundation, Mobile Meals, or a charity of your choice.
