Nancy A. Cole

July 4, 1916 — September 29, 2015

Nancy Ames Cole left this world peacefully on September 29, 2015. She came into the world on July 4, 1916 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a remarkable person and many wanted to be invited into her life and join with her in the story and adventure of “what's next?” She married Roy Wheaton Cole Jr. on December 25, 1936. Roy had recently graduated from West Point and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX, with the First Calvary Division. Nancy and her children (Roy, Ann and John) lived all over the world as they followed Roy in his military career. She joined her husband in fox hunting, competing in equestrian competitions, being entertained by Swedish royalty and taking cooking lessons from Julia Child. She loved skeet shooting into her 80's. She was a gourmet cook and entertained her friends and family until shortly before she died. She left Santa Fe and joined her son, Roy and his wife Barbara, in Spartanburg in 2005. She was 89 and it only took weeks before she found her way around Spartanburg and enrolled in art and sculpting classes. She flourished as an artist and in her late 90's she became somewhat of a legend! Nancy's beloved daughter, Ann, died in 2000. Nancy's children, Roy and John and their spouses (Barbara and Karen), along with six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild will miss her sorely. She brought joy and laughter to all that met her. Life was not always easy for Nancy but she was an “event” and showed up at the party of life everyday with anticipation of “what's next.” The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff at White Oak Nursing Home. They went above and beyond to meet not only Nancy's needs but those of her family at all times. We also want to thank Toni Roberts, Nancy's companion and dear friend for her devotion to Nancy. A Celebration of her life will be held at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church at 10:00 am, Thursday, October 8, 2015. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flower, memorials may be made to the Jackson C. Bundy Spartanburg Art Museum Scholarship Endowment, c/o Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 E. Kennedy Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
