Spartanburg, SC- Sandra Carolyn Brown Warlick, 63, wife of H. Gaines Warlick III, passed away on October 6, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on February 2, 1952, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the beloved daughter of Mildred Brown Allen and the late Franklin George Brown Jr. and the stepdaughter of the late J.D. Allen, and daughter-in-law of Halford (Hal) Gaines and Betty Warlick and the late Sandra Ballard Sooey.
A graduate of Spartanburg High School and Winthrop College, Sandy was an early childhood education teacher with Spartanburg District 7 and Spartanburg Day School. Following her retirement, she homeschooled her younger son, Hal, currently a freshman in the Honors College at Clemson University.
Sandy had a zest for life and loved to laugh. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions were all meant to be celebrated with family and friends.
She was active in many ministries of Westminster Presbyterian Church, including the women’s sewing ministry and Bible studies. Sandy was a member of the Friendship Garden Club, several book clubs and the Sagent Society. An enthusiast about good nutrition, she loved to garden and to observe God’s world.
In addition to her husband, Gaines, Sandy is survived by two sons, John Rutledge Hastings Jr. and his wife Kristen of Inman, SC and Halford (Hal) Gaines Warlick IV of Spartanburg; her cherished grandchildren Millie Katelyn, Holden Rutledge, and Macie Elizabeth Hastings; her two sisters, Lydia Brown Johnston and husband Kirk and Catherine Brown Crowley and husband Pat, all of Spartanburg; her step-brothers , Charles Allen and wife Kathy of Spartanburg and Kenneth Allen of Atlanta, GA ; a host of nieces and nephews, and her faithful canine companion Toby.
The family expresses its appreciation to all of Sandy’s caregivers, who gave such compassionate attention to her during her illness. Heartfelt thanks are given to all who enfolded and embraced Sandy.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on Friday, October 9th, at 3:30PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church conducted by The Rev. Stephen M. Wise. Visitation will be prior to the service at 2: 00PM in the Westminster Church Fellowship Hall.
Pallbearers will include Jack Cobb, Greg Stinson, Henry Hargrove, Danny Thompson, John Johnston, Patrick Crowley, Mike Dietz, and Rich Harris.
