Spartanburg, SC- Jane Tauber Lewis, 81, though alive in the hearts and memories of her family, completed her earthly journey and died on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Born May 26, 1934 in Germantown, PA, Jane was a daughter of the late Gustave Milton and Gladys Mae Buchanan Tauber. The first child in her family to attend college, Jane left for Antioch College when she was only sixteen and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1957. While working at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA Jane met her husband, Giles Floyd Lewis, Jr. In addition to her childhood in Germantown and college years in Ohio, Jane lived in Clinton, Laurens and Greenville, SC, Lexington, KY, Nashville, TN, Houston, TX, and Spartanburg, SC, all communities in which her husband served congregations. Throughout the 1950s and 60s Jane was an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. Jane was a devoted and generous wife, mother, and friend. She was a compassionate and engaged listener, a lover of new ideas, intelligent discussion, strong coffee, and dark chocolate. She was a passionate and liberal-hearted spirit, glad to be a part of God’s amazing world. Jane treasured moments with family, friends and neighbors. She filled her home with laughter, stimulating conversation, and good books. Jane enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading and giving biscuits to dogs in the neighborhood. Jane made trips to Israel, France, and Turkey. On one of many trips to Great Britain, she attended the 1988 Lambeth Conference in Cambridge, England where she was chosen to carry the banner for the Church in Wales. Jane is survived by Giles, her husband of 58 years; her children Carolina Henrietta Meriam Lewis (John Vallas) of Spartanburg, SC, Giles Floyd Lewis, III (Joyce) of Newton, MA, Celia Milton Lewis (Scotland Stout) of Ruston, LA, and Nathaniel Joseph Lewis (Christina Dragonetti) of El Cerrito, CA; her grandchildren Sam Perry (Jenny) of Eugene, OR, Melissa Pluchos (Chris) of Matthews, NC, and Avery Jane Stout of Ruston, LA; great grandchildren Athena and Sebastian Pluchos and Charlie and Porter Perry. Jane took much joy and pride in her children and grandchildren, for whom she was grateful to God. Jane also leaves behind her sister Ruthe Tauber Buzby (John S. Buzby); brother-in-law, Charles B. Lewis; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Parsons, Darlene Lewis, and Nancy Tauber; cousins and many adoring nieces and nephews as well as treasured friends, The Reverend Thom Longino and Cezmi Turhan. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Richard Tauber. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 9th, at 1:00pm at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, officiated by The Reverend Dr. Clay H. Turner, The Reverend Stephen Y. McGehee and The Reverend Robert Lee Parsons, Jr., Jane’s nephew. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Family Life Center. Through her positive influence on others, Jane Tauber Lewis has left the world a better place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to The American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102-1403.
