Spartanburg, SC- Mildred W. Brown Allen, 89, wife of the late J. D. Allen, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Born July 28, 1926 in Spartanburg, SC, Mildred was a daughter of the late Harry Dantzler and Truman Miles Wimberly. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School, class of 1943, and the Robinson School of Business. Mildred retired from the Spartanburg County Office of Education. A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, she faithfully sang in the Chancel Choir for over 25 years. Mildred enjoyed membership in Circle 7 and active participation in church activities. Mildred is survived by her daughters, Lydia Brown Johnston (Kirk) and Catherine Brown Crowley (Pat); son in-law, H. Gaines Warlick, III; step sons, Charles Raymond Allen (Kathy) and Kenneth Herschel Allen; eight grandchildren, Mary Kirkland Johnston Morton (Marshall) of Columbia, SC, Catherine Johnston Bailey (Kevin) of Summerville, SC, John Blassingame Johnston (Ainsley) of Columbia, SC, Edward Patrick Crowley, Jr. (Shannon) of Chapel Hill, NC, John Rutledge Hastings, Jr. (Kristen) of Inman, SC, Halford “Hal” Gaines Warlick, IV, Charles Raymond Allen, Jr., and Matthew Wade Allen of Spartanburg, SC; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Frances W. Bessent Charles (Jesse) of Spartanburg, SC; a host of nieces and nephews; and devoted friends, Irene Cook of Pacolet, SC and Alice Reynolds of Columbus, NC. In addition to her husband, J. D. Allen, Mildred was predeceased by her first husband, Franklin George Brown, Jr.; a daughter, Sandra “Sandy” Brown Warlick; and four brothers, Daniel Miles, Charles Pinckney, Harry Dantzler, Jr., and James LeRoy Wimberly. Mildred embraced her beautiful, healthy, and vibrant life of 89 years with love and joy for her church, family, and friends. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held Saturday, February 13th, 2:00PM at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by The Reverend Dr. Thomas E. Evans and The Reverend Joanne R. Hull. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parlor. A private committal will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, John Johnston, Patrick Crowley, John Hastings, Hal Warlick, Chuck Allen, and Matt Allen.
