Gladys Abernathy Hughey

Roebuck, SC- Gladys Abernathy Hughey, 79, wife of the late S. H. Hughey, died Thursday, March 24, 2016. Born February 12, 1937 in Spartanburg, SC, Gladys was a daughter of the late William N. and Bessie Mae Abernathy. She was a graduate of Roebuck High School and for many years, was employed with Southern Bell. After Gladys and S. H. married, they lived in several locations during his US Navy service, then settled in Chesapeake, VA for a number of years. She relocated to Spartanburg after his death. Gladys was a member of Canaan Baptist Church. Gladys is survived by her sister, Thelma A. Sanders; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Glenn and Gail Harris of Pensacola, FL. In addition to her husband, Gladys was predeceased by her brother, J.C. Abernathy; and sisters, Frances A. Garrett, Ruby A. Griffin, and Celeste A. Varner. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 26th, 2-3PM at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow in the Chapel at 3PM. Burial will be held in Wellford Cemetery.
