Elizabeth Ann "Susan" Hinman Chapman Young

Spartanburg, SC- Elizabeth Ann (Susan) Hinman Chapman Young, 86, - Susan Chapman Young, who had an unwavering love for her family and an uncommon devotion to her friends, was received by the Lord on April 1, 2016. Born May 26, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois, Susan was the daughter of the late Norman Seymour and Bess Bryan Hinman. She was married in 1952 to her high school sweet heart, Joseph Wallace Chapman, who predeceased her in 1985. Susan is survived by her brother, George Wheeler Hinman, and predeceased by his wife Mary Cauffield Hinman. She is also survived by her 3 children, Elizabeth Chapman Young and her husband Thomas Rudolph Young III, Joseph Wallace Chapman, Jr. and his wife Ashley Bryant Chapman, and Norman Hinman Chapman and his wife Martha (Muffet) Wright Chapman; seven grandchildren: Thomas Rudolph Young, IV and his wife Kristen Nix Young, Bryan Chapman Young and his fiancée Erin Kell, Elizabeth Ann Young Miers and her husband Walton Lee Miers IV, Joseph Wallace Chapman III, Hugh Bryant Chapman, Martha Mears Chapman and Catherine Hinman Chapman; and four great grandchildren: Thomas Rudolph Young V, John Wallace Young, Mattie Mae Young and Mary Elizabeth Miers. In addition, Susan was predeceased by her second husband Thomas Rudolph Young, Jr. and is survived by four step children: Kenneth Edwards Young and his wife Cynthia Higgins Young, Edward Hotchkiss Young and his wife Clark Newton Young, Mary Jane Young McWilliams and her husband William Locke McWilliams and Berkeley Wilson Young; five step grandchildren: Mary Edwards Young, Anne Higgins Young Bell and her husband Randall McSwain Bell, Edward Hotchkiss Young Jr., Anna Blanche Young Pennington and her husband Brandon Pennington and Mary Jane McWilliams; and four great step grandchildren: Moise Young, David Young, Anne Harrison Bell and Walker Bell. Susan influenced so many people simply leading by example. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She managed to quietly improve the lives of so many through her unconditional love and caring for others. Susan founded a Girl Scout Troup in Enoree, SC and later served on the Girl Scouts Board. She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, where she was an active member for 75 years. Susan was a regular driver, contributor and Board member at Mobile Meals often serving those 10 years her junior. She served on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club. She was a member of the Assembly of Spartanburg and the Mayflower Society. Most of all, she was a calming influence for her extended family and everyone who was blessed to know her. Susan attracted so many friends whether at her parents’ house in Camp Croft, on her front porch in Enoree, SC and with her walking group on Burnett Drive. Susan made you feel better just by being around her. Susan loved her friends and was quietly a competitor at heart. She enjoyed tennis and competed until age 80 and she loved to play Bridge. She was the Spartanburg High School ping pong champion in 1946, where she graduated; she followed her husband’s golf, caddied for her son and was the #1 fan of her children and grandchildren. Susan graduated from Winthrop College in 1951. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to Susan’s faithful caregiver and friend, Ruth Garren, who has been devoted to her for the last 4 years. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 to 6 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Young, III, and following the Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. A service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held 4 PM, Sunday, April 3, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. A private service of committal will be held for the family in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
