Spartanburg, SC- Elgin Elmira McGinnis, 86, husband of the late Helen Sloop McGinnis, died Saturday, May 14, 2016. Born October 7, 1929 in Kannapolis, NC, Elgin was a son of the late Leroy and Betty Lee McGinnis. After high school, Mr. McGinnis honorably served his country in the US Army. He retired from Burlington Industries after many years of service. Elgin was a lifetime Christian who worshipped at All Saints Anglican Mission in the Americas. He loved the Lord, and worked all his life for his churches. He was a Boy Scout Leader, and also umpired and refereed sports for a large part of his life. Elgin was a sweet, kind, and generous man to all that he met. This world will miss him, but heaven won’t “return to sender.” Elgin is survived by his sons, Lamar McGinnis (Debbie) of Mills River, NC and Robert T. McGinnis of Barnwell, SC; a daughter, Kim Stroud (Ben) of Spartanburg, SC; nine grandchildren, Chris McGinnis, Nicholas McGinnis, Andrew McGinnis, Josh McGinnis, Meghan McGinnis, Talon Stroud, Meredith Rissler Stroud, Catey McGinnis, and Camen Stroud; and one great grandchild, Abigail McGinnis. In addition to his wife of 62 years, he was predeceased by his sisters and parents. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 18th, 12noon at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis, NC. Committal will be in Carolina Memorial Park.
