John Truman Poole, Sr.

Spartanburg, SC- John Truman Poole, Sr. relinquished his suffering to begin an everlasting life with God, on August 10, 2016. He was born in Kings Mountain, N.C. on September 13, 1924, and is survived by his life’s partner, the love of his life, and wife of 65 years, Rose James Poole, a daughter, Rosemary P. Cox and son-in-law, Richard W. Cox, a son, John T. Poole, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Deborah K. Poole. Grandchildren are John T. (Trey) Poole, III, Rosemary Kathryn (Katie) Cox, Tamara (Tami) K. Enright, Joseph (Joey) F. Kelly and five great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Jimmy S. Poole, Jacqueline P. Herlong, Mary Ann P. Clary and Delia P. White. Mr. Poole was a combat veteran of World War II serving in the Sixth United States Army. He was in the first wave of assault troops for the invasion of the Lingayen Gulf in the Philippine Islands, January, 1945. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School, a member of the Limestone College Class of 1950 (where he met his wife), and a 1972 alumni of the Graduate School of Banking at LSU. He was first employed by Harris-Hart Clothing Co. in Charlotte, N.C. Later he joined the former American Commercial Bank in Charlotte, assigned to their credit department. In 1962 he accepted an opportunity to work with the former Commercial National Bank of Spartanburg, S.C. From 1962 – 1991 Mr. Poole was a commercial loan officer with the former First National Bank of S.C., the former South Carolina National Bank, the former First Union Bank & Trust Co., the former Southern National Bank, and the former First Federal of S.C., where he retired as Senior Vice President. He was very instrumental in facilitating the financial growth and success of hundreds of Spartanburg businesses and corporations during his banking tenure. He was a member of the Civitan Club of Spartanburg and the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. The family will receive family and friends at the graveside interment services at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, SC, Monday, August 15th, at 3:30PM.
