Robert A. Hammett

Spartanburg, SC- Robert A. Hammett, 88, longtime Spartanburg attorney, died on Friday, August 26, 2016. A native of Inman, he was the son of the late A. K. Hammett and Sunie Hall Hammett, and is the husband of Barbara Byrd Hammett, formerly of Columbia. Robert was a graduate of Inman High School, Wofford College, and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He served four years in the U.S. Army on active duty in Korea and Europe, and served 18 years in the Army Reserve, from which he retired as Lieutenant Colonel. Robert was a former mayor of Inman, and a member of the SC House of Representatives from 1960-1968. He was chairman of the county delegation for the entire eight years by virtue of receiving the most votes in each election (countywide election). Robert was also a member of the Ways & Means Committee in the House and city attorney for Inman for more than 25 years. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the SC Bar Association and served as president of the Spartanburg Bar Association from 1994-1995. Robert was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. He was past President of the Advent Foundation and a member and past President of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Robert also served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Charles Lea Center and its Foundation. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Robert, Jr. (Evan) of Spartanburg and David H, M.D. of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Eliza Hall, Robert III, and Caraway. Also surviving are a brother, Ted B. Hammett of Inman; and a sister, Margaret H. New of Dublin, GA. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 29th, 3:30PM at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, followed by a reception in the Parish and Community Life Center. A private family burial will follow the reception.
