Ralph Marshall Winn Jr. Spartanburg - Ralph Marshall Winn Jr. died November 16, 2016, two months short of his 97th birthday. Born in Plum Branch, South Carolina, he was the last survivor of seven children of Ralph Marshall Winn Sr. and Leila Cheatham Winn and was the widower of Hazel Isehower Winn. He retired in 1985 from a railroad career that began as a telegraph operator at $50 per month and was interrupted only by service in the U.S. Army in the Second World War, a B.S. degree earned at the University of South Carolina on the GI Bill, and a recall to Army service in Korea during that war. His many friends remember him for his unfailing cheerfulness, patience, and inability to see anything but the best in anyone he knew, as well as his post-retirement tennis and years of volunteer work for Mobile Meals and the Alzheimer’s Association, the latter made particularly meaningful in light of his 12+ years of full-time caring for Hazel before her death in 2002. He is survived by his son Marshall and daughter-in-law Jeannette of Greenville, son Stephen of Sumter, grandson Richard Winn and his wife Bonnie and great-granddaughter Hazel of Oberursel, Germany, granddaughter Eleanor Winn and her fiancé Alex Nordholm of Brooklyn, New York, and special friend for the last several years of his life, Faye Foster Brown of Spartanburg. A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, at Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, with the family receiving friends in the sanctuary immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, 419 E. Main St., Spartanburg 29302, or Alzheimer’s Association, 901 S. Pine St., Spartanburg 29302.
