Spartanburg, SC- Flora Tate Cavin, 94, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Hospice House surrounded by her family. Born July 26, 1922, in Pacolet, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Earl Tate. She was married to her high school sweetheart, James Henry Cavin, for 69 loving years before his death on Dec. 12, 2013. Flora graduated from Spartanburg High School, Spartanburg Junior College and retired from Spartanburg School District 7 as a kindergarten assistant. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 72 years and a long-time member of HF Chreitzburg Sunday School. She sang in the choir, served as president of United Methodist Women, worked on the altar guild, played piano for Sunday and Bible school and was a devoted mother, wife and friend. She was active in several dance clubs, loved to read, draw and paint, and enjoyed traveling with Bethel and Cavin Tours on many trips abroad and across the US. She is survived by her brother, Henry E. Tate (Marjorie); daughter, Karen Cavin Harpe (Michael); sons, Rev. James Barry Cavin (Cheryl) of Columbia, S.C.; and Rev. Meredith Lee Cavin (Susan) of Brighton, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by son, Leslie Dwaine Cavin of Spartanburg; sister, Peggy Tate Burgess; and brother, Thomas Earl Tate Jr. The funeral service will be Friday, December 9, 2016, 1 p.m. at Bethel Methodist Church in the sanctuary with visitation following in the church parlor. The family will have a private graveside burial before the service.
