John Montgomery Cart

Spartanburg – John Montgomery Cart, 91, died on Monday, January 2, 2017. Born March 17, 1925 in Spartanburg, SC, John was a son of the late John and Lucile Montgomery Cart. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lelia Manning Cart in 1982; his late wife, Lynn Allrich Cart in 2013; his sister, Elizabeth Cart Morrison; and his brother, Walter Montgomery Cart. John is survived by his son, John Montgomery Cart, Jr. and his wife, Krishna, of Chantilly, VA; his daughter, Katharine Cart Crawford and her husband, John, of Sullivan’s Island, SC and their two children, John Maxwell Crawford, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA and Lelia Manning Crawford of Sullivan’s Island, SC. He is also survived by four step-children, Steve Allrich and his wife, Karri, of Lake Oswego, OR, Nancy Borrett and her husband, Craige, of Yonges Island, SC, Marty McDiarmid of Springfield, MA, and Peggy Reed and her husband, Lynn, of Pisgah Forest, NC; and many step-grandchildren. John is also survived by his brother, Ben Montgomery Cart and his wife, Ella, of St. Simons Island, GA. John attended city schools in Spartanburg through middle school and graduated valedictorian of his class at the Baylor School for Boys in Chattanooga, TN.  He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, MA with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.  He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. John honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines and was part of the V-12 program. John worked over 25 years for Spartan Mills and served on their Board of Directors. He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 16th, 12 Noon at The Episcopal Church of the Advent followed by a reception in the Parish and Community Life Center. A committal will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
