Moore, SC- Franklin James Talley, Jr. entered eternal rest on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home at age 74. The son of Franklin James, Sr. and Mary Talley, he was born just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 1, 1942. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Susan Hall Talley, his parents, and his sister, Barbara Jean Sink. He is survived by his son, Scott Franklin Talley and his wife, Kelly, and their sons, Hudson, Leyton and Wells; son, Matthew Hall Talley and his twin sons, Jackson and Greyson. Frank’s greatest joy over the last few years has been cheering for his grandsons at their ballgames. Frank had many special friends that cared for him since Susan’s passing almost four years ago. His sons want to especially thank his niece, Lindsie Sink, and his caregivers for their tremendous love and support over the past year. After graduating Lower Merion High School, Frank came to Spartanburg in 1963 to play basketball at Wofford College. He earned his degree in 1967 and began a career in teaching and coaching in Polk County, North Carolina. His college coach and mentor, Gene Alexander, brought him back to Wofford in 1973 to be the assistant basketball coach. While coaching at Wofford, he taught History at Dorman High School. Frank loved his many students and talked about them often. He remained close to a number of his former players and they were a special part of his life to the very end. After coaching, Frank began working at Spartan Foods Systems, Inc. in construction, a career he enjoyed for over 20 years. The Spartan Foods team became his second family. He remained in construction management/commercial construction until retirement. Whenever he was asked what he did for a living, Frank always replied “I play in the dirt.” Frank was a parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for 44 years. He served on Parish Council and coached youth sports. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 9th, 5:00-7:00PM at Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 10th, 3:00PM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Spartanburg. Burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Gardens. Frank and Susan were dedicated to the success of local students, both in and out of the classroom. The family has established a scholarship in their memory to reward Spartanburg County School District Six students based on academic performance, leadership, and service to the community.
