Grady "Gunny" Gene Thompson

Moore, SC- Grady Gene Thompson, 73, husband of Sandra Maria Boles Thompson, died Saturday, March 18, 2017. Born August 8, 1943 in Hendersonville, NC, Grady was a son of the late Grady Sullivan and Doris Hopkins Thompson. He honorably served his country for 20 years in the United States Marine Corps and 10 years in the Reserve. During that time, he was a Purple Heart recipient and stood honor guard in the rotunda at the casket of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Grady was also an Officer and Color Guard Commander with Hutchings-Caldwells Marine Corps League. He retired from the Spartanburg County Detention Center as an officer, Spartanburg County Roads and Bridges, and G&S Trucking Company as owner and operator after 10 years. In addition to his beloved wife, Grady is survived by his two sons, Gary Thompson and Steven Thompson and his wife, Michelle; two step-grandchildren, Sarah and Lauren McClure; two sisters, Joye Barnwell and Frances Trentham; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James Thompson; and brother in-law, Bill Trentham. The family will receive friends Monday, March 20th, 6-8PM at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 21st, 2PM at Dunbar Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Steven Griffith. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
