Alfred Francis Wales, 86, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025. He was born in Washington, PA on September 11, 1938 to the late Alfred and Mary Frances Wallett Wales.
After earning a BS in Physics from Washington & Jefferson College in 1960 he moved with his wife Jean (Pepper) to Salisbury N.C. where they raised their children, Eddie and Sherry. The family moved to Spartanburg in 1975 when Al became an accomplished engineer and quality control manager with Hoechst Celanese Corporation in Greer. He was a long-time member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, where he and Jean enjoyed fellowship as members of the “Primetimers” club. Al loved to play golf and was a member of Three Pines Golf Club. He was an avid fan of all his hometown Pittsburgh sports teams, the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. He attended many Washington and Jefferson reunions and traveled with Jean to the Rose Bowl for W&J’s 75th anniversary of playing in the bowl. He enjoyed 66 years of marriage with his beloved Jean and relished every moment of raising his two children and grandson, Nolan.
Alfred leaves behind his wife, Jean Pepper Wales; son, Joseph “Eddie” Wales (Tracy); grandson, Nolan Jennings (Cheyanne), granddaughters, Ella, Avery, and Annie Wales; and great-grandchildren, Jack and Rylin Jennings. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Wales, his daughter, Sherry Wales Jennings, and her husband, Rusty Jennings.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 101 St Matthews Ln, Spartanburg, SC 29301. The service will be conducted by Father Rob Brown.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Alfred to the altar guild of St. Matthews Episcopal Church of Spartanburg.
