Anna S. Cassell

September 1, 1930 — February 9, 2025

Spartanburg, SC

Anna Cassell, 94, of Spartanburg, passed away on February 9, surrounded by her loving family.

Anna was born in 1930 in Somerset, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Luther Dot Shadoan and Clarine Rowe Hayes Shadoan. She was the youngest of ten, and graduated from Boswell High School, in Boswell, Indiana, followed by medical trade school in Gary, Indiana.

Anna married Carroll Orin Cassell in 1958. They settled in Vienna, Virginia where they raised six children. Anna was active in her local church supporting the Children’s Day Care Ministry for 14 years. After Carroll completed 35 years of service in the Federal Government, they retired in Spartanburg. She dedicated her life to loving and caring for her family and the children of others.

Anna was welcoming and open to everyone she encountered. Her fun-loving spirit, uplifting energy, and giving heart were her contributions to the world. Her crooked smile and boisterous laughter filled the room with positivity. She always made extra effort to connect with her family and friends with a visit, phone call, or sweet gesture. Anna especially loved genealogy and history. She would spend many hours researching her ancestors and excitedly shared many stories she gleaned from her passion. She was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Roebuck Baptist Church, and enjoyed embroidery and playing card games.

She is preceded in death by her husband Carroll, son Phillip Cassell, and her five brothers and four sisters.

Anna is survived by Elaine C. Turner and husband Michael (Awendaw), Ross Cassell (Spartanburg), Douglas Cassell and wife Sandra (Boiling Springs), Anita Cassell (Spartanburg), Alan Cassell, wife Amy, and granddaughter Caitlin (San Francisco Bay Area), and granddaughter Candice Thompson, husband Mike, and two great grandchildren Isaac and Lucas (Walkertown, NC).

A celebration of life ceremony is planned for mid Spring, her favorite time of the year when flowers abound and verdant colors flourish.
