Spartanburg, SC- Anne Calvert Thomas Irwin, 89, passed away Friday, December 18, 2020, after a ten year decline into dementia. A lifelong resident of Spartanburg, Anne graduated with a B.A. in studio art from Hollins College, and returned to her hometown to marry another Spartanburg native, Wallace R. Irwin. She was raised at Trinity Methodist Church; was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent; and transferred membership to St. Francis Anglican of Spartanburg. She served as altar guild head, Bible study teacher, and prayer group leader throughout her life, and was a devout and faithful servant to her church family. Anne was always active in numerous community organizations: board member of Spartanburg Methodist College; past president of the Thursday Study Club; member of the Spartanburg Garden Club, the Modern Literature Book Club, and the Junior League of Spartanburg. Anne was a skilled artist and botanist; an avid reader, and lover of knowledge of all kinds; fierce Scrabble opponent; loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Paul C. and Josephine A. Thomas; husband, Wallace R. Irwin; sister, Pat. T. Bain; and son in-law, Ned E. Lee. Anne is survived by daughters, Page Irwin Lee, Mary C. Irwin, and Jodi I. Carter (Brian); four grandchildren, Katherine Lee Van Vleet, Margaret Lee Burriss, Caroline Lee Smith, Matthew J. Carter; and seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their undying gratitude to Doris Williams, Jackie Tate, Shanda Jackson, Brenda Steen, Gwen Williams, and Jessica McKennedy for their years of skilled care and devotion to our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Anglican Church, 601 Webber Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Anglican Church on Tuesday, December 22nd at 2:00 PM. Because of her faith, our whole household is saved.
