Anne Porchér Zeigler Perrin (affectionately known to her family, and the South Carolina DMV, as “Shoosh”) died on January 2, 2021 at the age of 93. Anne Porchér was born in Orangeburg, SC on June 24, 1927 to John Tatum and Anne Louise Gelzer Zeigler. She grew up on a dairy farm in Cope, SC and graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1945 where she was the head majorette. After high school, she attended Limestone College in Gaffney, SC for two years and then transferred to University of South Carolina. She graduated from USC in 1949, with a degree in retailing. While at USC, she was an active member in Delta Delta Delta sorority and she maintained an active interest in the organization for the rest of her life. While attending USC, she met a law student, Edward P. (“Pat”) Perrin, who became the love of her life and husband of 64 years. Upon marriage, they made Spartanburg their home where she applied her enthusiasm, commitment and positive attitude to her family, her community, her church, and her many friends. There is not an area of Spartanburg that was not touched by her style, grace, boundless energy, talents and love. Anne Porchér was a sustaining member of the Spartanburg Junior League, a member of Tom and Tare Garden Club, chaired the Peggy Gignilliat Society Fundraiser, and was past president of The Assembly debutante club. She served on the boards of the Spartanburg Little Theatre, the United Way Allocations Panel of Spartanburg, the Arts Council of Spartanburg, the Beaux Arts Ball, and was a Mobile Meals Volunteer. She also served as secretary of the South Carolina Mother of the Year Committee. She also lovingly served the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg in many capacities for over 60 years, including the Beautification Committee and as the Sunday School coordinator and teacher for many years. From 1993-2001 she chaired the Church’s Bell Committee, which was responsible for rehabilitating and replacing the 48 bell carillon for the Bell Tower originally built in 1926. As a cancer survivor, Anne Porchér was actively involved with the Ruth Smith Lending Closet with the Spartanburg Junior League, and the Cancer Association of Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. She served on the board of the Cancer Association and chaired its fashion show for 5 years. Shoosh was an outstanding “Chef” (subscribing to the Julia Child school of cooking that butter makes everything better), had two green thumbs (with a particular affinity for roses and her incredible rose garden), was an aspiring actress (giving a Tony-award winning performance as the Head Mother in Pine Street Elementary’s rendition of Sister Act), was a self-proclaimed “good-kiss” instructor (just ask her grandchildren), was a consummate hostess, an awesome tennis player (playing into her 70s), accomplished in duplicate bridge and could have been Fred Astaire’s dance partner. Anne Porchér was preceded in death by her loving husband Pat, and her mother, father and brother John Tatum (“Jack”) Zeigler of Orangeburg. Anne Porchér is survived by her children, Anne Perrin Flynn and husband Lawrence E. Flynn, Jr. of Spartanburg; Sallie Perrin White of Greenville; Edward Patterson Perrin, Jr. (and wife Linda F. Perrin) of Dallas, Texas; her grandchildren, Lawrence E. Flynn III (and wife Rachel), Tatum Z. Flynn (and wife Margaret), Anne Porchér Flynn Burnett (and husband Haynes), Perrin Porchér White, J. She was also looking forward to the arrival of two more great grandchildren in 2021. The family also wants to fondly thank Herbert Jones, Jr. for his years of dedicated service to the entire Perrin family, especially Shoosh and Pat. Shoosh will be greatly missed by all those who loved and adored her. There will be online streaming of the private service celebrating Anne Porchér’s life at 4:00 p.m. EST. Wednesday, January 6th.
