Arthur Harrelson McQueen, Jr, a.k.a. Arthur Junior, Art, Dad, Papa, Pop graduated to his Heavenly home on June 20, 2024, at 82.
Art was born November 14, 1941, in Mullins, SC, to Arthur Harrelson McQueen, Sr. and Mary Pinson McQueen. Art graduated from Loris High School in 1960 where he played sports and was president of the student body. He earned an Eagle Scout Award.
Art received a B.A. in English from Presbyterian College in 1964 where he was vice-president of the student body, chairman of the Honor Council, president of Sigma Nu Fraternity, served as executive officer of the R.O.T.C. Battalion and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army.
He met the love of his life, Jayne Culbertson McQueen from Robbins, NC, at Sonny’s Pavilion at Cherry Grove Beach where they shagged the night away. Jayne says, “Art put sand in my tar heels.” They were married June 20, 1965.
In 1967 Art received a Juris Doctor from The University of South Carolina and was a member of the Law Review. Later he was commissioned into the US Army JAG Corp as a captain. He resigned to practice estate and tax law in Spartanburg, SC.
Art’s greatest love is his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He accepted Jesus when he was twelve, but embraced a personal relationship with Jesus through Young Life. Art and Jayne became volunteer leaders in Young Life. Studying and teaching God’s Word brought Art much joy. He taught a men’s Bible study for over thirty years which continues on. He taught a Sunday School class called Truth Seekers and was elected Elder in his church. During Covid his grandsons asked him to participate in a weekly Zoom Bible study. Over a year ago, his granddaughters asked him to teach them and their friends the Bible. They began in Genesis and were in the book of Numbers until he was no longer able to teach.
Art helped start Mission Carolina which gathered believers to pray. He was instrumental in bringing the Franklin Graham crusade to Spartanburg and lead the prayer team. Art was active in the Rotary Club and delivered Mobile Meals with fellow Rotarians. Art helped bring the annual National Day of Prayer to Spartanburg. This year Art was awarded “The Beacon of Prayer” award. Art helped found The South Carolina Christian Foundation. A week before his passing, while lying in his bed at The Hospice House, he was awarded “Trustee Emeritus” of this foundation.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Jean McQueen Cox and Agnes McQueen Lee and his brother in-law James Addison Culbertson, Jr., the latter three passed in the last two months. He is survived by his beloved wife Jayne Culbertson McQueen, his daughter Amy McQueen Mulvaney (Mark), his son James Arthur McQueen (Kristin), his sister Mary McQueen Brogdon (Tommy) and eight grandchildren Joshua Mark Mulvaney, twins Andrew Chappelle Mulvaney and Matthew McQueen Mulvaney, Natalia Jayne McQueen, twins Sophia Elizabeth McQueen and Isabella James McQueen, Lila Elizabeth Crispell, and Collin Ryan Crispell as well as many extended family members. Art “adopted” many sons, daughters, and grandchildren, who looked to him as their mentor and role model, yet he always pointed everyone to Jesus.
The family wishes to thank the incredible team from Spartanburg Hospice and the medical team that cared for Art.
Art’s celebration of life service will be Saturday June 29th at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm with a reception at the church to follow.
