Barbara Joan Helderman Tardiff

February 26, 1936 — April 14, 2022

Barbara Helderman Tardiff departed this life on April 14, 2022 in her Virginia, home. Barbara was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina February 26, 1936. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James F. Helderman. Many years of her life was in the military with her first husband Maxie Lancaster. Their son Michael D. Lancaster was born during this time. She was the last descendent in her immediate family.

Barbara excelled in her Pauline High School years with a paragraph of attributes too long to list. She returned often to see her old classmates. She was a student in the Montreat College where she gave serious consideration to becoming a Director of Christian Education. In her early childhood she made her Profession of Faith in the Old Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church which is now known as the Old Stone Church. The Late Rev. R. M. Phillips heard her profession and baptized her. The record reads, “The doors of the church were opened after the sermon and the Session was called and opened with prayer. Barbara Helderman was presented for membership. After examination Barbara was baptized……” She remembered this as if it were yesterday. She has been a large contributor to the restoration of the Old Stone Church. Her joy of giving can be seen in the beautiful windows, the gas lighted entrance columns and heard in the glorious brass bell unlike any other with such a heavenly tone used for marriages and joyful occasions. In the past years she renewed her membership in the church of her heart, The Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church where again she found it her joy in contributing to the Lord’s work.

She was predeceased by Maxie Lancaster, her first husband, her husband Richard Tardiff, her son Michael D. Lancaster, parents James F Helderman, Harold and Mary Stokes Funderburk. She considered Sheree Kendall, Marc Konik, Dr. B. E. (Bobby) Pettit and family as her extended family.

Her service will be Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. in the Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. There will be a Remembrance Lunch in the Family Life Center following the committal service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 279, or to any Wildlife Conservation group or humane society.
