Bernice Lunsford Hawke’s faith became sight on Sunday, April 23, 2023, when she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus, her Lord and Savior. She lived a full life of 88 years; one year for every key on her piano.
Bernice was the daughter of Charles Eugene Lunsford and Neva Sanders Lunsford. She was born on June 9, 1934 and grew up in Leary, GA. She attended Florida State University, where she majored in Music and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Her love for music was a constant throughout her life. She could often be found playing the piano at Leary Methodist Church or singing in the choir. Her love of music filled her home as well and her family will treasure the memories of time spent around the piano with her.
Bernice married Sherwood Hawke on September 19, 1953 and, for 57 years, they built a beautiful life together, devoted to each other and their family. Bernice was active in the community, serving on the Board of the Calhoun County Hospital Authority and numerous committees within the Methodist Church. Bernice was an avid reader, who enjoyed a good book. She loved to laugh and share a good story with family and friends.
Bernice’s most treasured role was that of mother and grandmother. Her sacrificial love and care for her children and grandchildren was unmatched. She graciously welcomed any opportunity to serve, encourage, and create lifelong memories with those she loved.
Bernice was a dedicated wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful friend, who will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Anita Crook, and her 3 children, Michael Sherwood Hawke (Denise), Donna Hawke White (David), and Mark Lunsford Hawke (Stephanie); adored by her 5 grandchildren, Katie Tucker (John), David White, Jr (Hannah), Jennifer Hawke, Taylor Hawke, and Paige Merritt (Austin); and 5 great-grandchildren, Lydia and Martin Tucker and Rebecca, Emily, and Sarah Kate White.
A Celebration of LIfe will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Leary United Methodist Church in Leary, GA. Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, prior to the service.
