Betty Breland Elston

Betty Breland Elston Spartanburg - Betty Breland Elston, 86, died Friday, February 9, 2018, after a brief illness. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi on August 21, 1931, she was the daughter of W. Ray and Mary Shevlin Breland. She grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and St. Louis, Missouri and was a graduate of Mary Institute Country Day School in St. Louis. An alumna of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She continued her education through graduate work in Library Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Upon moving to Spartanburg, South Carolina, with her husband, William C. Elston, M.D., Betty became a homemaker and was continually active in the community. She was a sustaining member and past president of The Debutante Club of Spartanburg and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by her two daughters, Susan Elston Conner and her husband Richard L. Conner of Spartanburg and Patricia Elston Cook and her husband Charles E. Cook, Jr. of San Jose, California; three grandchildren, William Elston Conner and his wife Meredith Corby Conner of Spartanburg, Katherine Conner White and her husband Taylor White of Spartanburg, and Charles Dylan Cook of San Jose. A private service for immediate family will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place in the columbarium of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg.  In memory of Betty, memorials may be made to the Adult Learning Center, 145 N.
