Spartanburg, SC - Carl W. Hughey, 93, was the son of the late Carl and Gladys Hughey of Piedmont, South Carolina. Carl passed away Friday, April 23, 2021. Born August 17th, 1927. He is survived by Doris Hughey, his wife of 73 years. Carl joined the Navy when he was 17 years old and served during WW2. Following his Navy tour, he attended Clemson. He began a career with Burroughs Corporation as a group manager. Still young when he retired, he became the owner/operator of multiple franchises including Curtis Mathes stores in Shelby and Lincolnton and Precision Tune shops in Spartanburg, Greenville, and Anderson. He enjoyed a post-retirement position with The Art Gallery of Spartanburg. In addition to his wife Doris, Carl is survived by four daughters and their spouses. Carol Ann and Steve Rosenberg, Cathy and Dan Ballard, Beck and John Grant, and Trish and Dennis Parker; five very dear grandchildren Amy Dickey (Jason), Danny Ballard, Eric Ballard (Kerise), Joshua Parker (Adrienne), Jacob Parker (Sara); twelve great grandchildren and a sister, Von Lee Gamble. He is predeceased by a sister, Dot Burry and a brother, James Hughey. He was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend and an avid Clemson fan. A devoted Christian. Carl was a member of the former Oak Grove Baptist Church for 60+ years where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and took special joy in participating in mission trips. Up until his death, he and Doris actively served with The Caregivers Ministry program. Most recently he was a member of The Church at the Mill and the Upward Bound Sunday School class. Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth and Rev. Gene Pace will conduct a memorial service at Dunbar Funeral Home Tuesday, April 27th, 2:00PM. The family will receive friends following the service.
