On Thursday May 27, 2021 Carolyn White Dennis passed peacefully from this life into the next after a brief stay at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. She was born June 27, 1935 to the late Glenn and Carrie Lee Pickel White of Knoxville, TN and married to the late Dr. James D. Dennis. She lived in Charleston, Woodruff, Roebuck, Myrtle Beach and settled in rural Pauline for 20+ years. Carolyn studied art at Converse College and did work as a medical illustrator at the Medical University of Charleston when her husband studied there. Her faith put her to work. Everywhere she went she volunteered in churches and loved working with children. She was well known for “taking in stray dogs and people”. Some of the dogs were broken and biters, but she never gave one away. Once she took you into her life, no matter how much trouble, you stayed. Carolyn worked with children for years at Walnut Grove UMC and became an extra Grandmom to many. The family heard stories while at Hospice of what a positive and ongoing influence she was in their children's lives, staying in touch into their adult years. “Mom” was her favorite title and she earned it raising her five children and delighting in her grandchildren and great grands who called her Gammy. She loved to laugh and sing. When she felt well, her exuberance would often overflow in operatic renditions of popular songs. We take comfort that before entering Hospice she told the family, “I'm tired, I'm not afraid and I'm ready to go.” She is survived by: James, Jr. (Caroline) Dennis, David White Dennis, Lynn Dennis Holler (Steve), Michael Vaughn Dennis (Terri), and William Matthew Dennis (Sonya). She was the beloved by many she “adopted” over the years. These included those who visited and held a special place in her heart: Perry Weinberg and 'baby Jill' (Michael) Parris, Tony Crane, Rene and Emily Gaddis, Sherry Vaughn, Terry Belcher, Brenda and Julia. Grands: J. E. David Dennis (Graham), Alison D. Hood (Michael), Christina D. Ness (Adam), Alex, Kylie and Andria Dennis and Carrie Beth Holler Bell (Brandon). Great Grands: Eli, Dori, Felix and Lucy Hood, Walker and Henry Ness, Ace Bell, Parker and Campbell Maroney. Carolyn's family welcomes friends and family to join them in a celebration of life and memorial service at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church on Sunday May 30th at 3pm with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, please honor her life by giving to a helping ministry, reading a book to a child or singing a song way too loud.
