Charles Everet “Humpy” Robertson of Roebuck, SC passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024 at the age of 92. He was born May 28, 1932 in Henrietta, NC to the late Zeb Ammon and Florence Bush Robertson.
As a young man, following the loss of his mother, Humpy was taken in by his older brother, Horace Robertson, and his wife, Bonnie, whom he called “Ma”. They raised him to be a strong, loving, Christian man.
Humpy had many jobs over his lifetime, everything from shining shoes and delivering groceries to working with Spartan Mill, but most of his career was spent in the scrap business. He served his community for decades with his family companies, H&R Steel Supplies and Humpy’s Firewood. Humpy’s happy place was his chair in front of the wood stove at H&R Steel, and he could be found there often, even in his last weeks.
A true southern gentleman, Humpy had a fondness for westerns, especially those featuring John Wayne. He enjoyed collecting antiques and guns and keeping them all in good condition. Humpy had a grip of steel and could tell what kind of man you are from how well you met his strong handshake. He also had a deep faith and was committed to his Lord. Humpy was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with Montgomery Lodge, a member of Shriners International, and part of the Hillbilly Clan.
Most of all, he loved his family. Humpy was always sure to remind them of his love and put them first. He will be deeply missed by many, including his wife of 72 years, his life, his “Pearl”, Doris Henderson Robertson, and his beloved children, Janet Godfrey (Frank), Karen Osorio (Carlos), and Charles “Darrell” Robertson (Laura).
Humpy is also survived by his grandchildren, Dusty Robertson (Crystal), Casey Crowe (Dallas), Carmen Dyer (Jason), Clay Robertson (Brooke), Sara Robertson, and Christina Carter (Eric); his special nephews and niece, Keith Robertson, Johnny Robertson, and Jane Robertson, who were like his siblings; granddaughter-in-law, Bonnie Brown; and sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Ronnie Brown.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00pm on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Frankie Taylor. Burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to extend a sincere and special Thank You to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Hospice Care and especially to his primary nurses – Rachel, Kensy and Susan.
In honor of Humpy, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3000 Stone Station Road, Roebuck, SC 29376, or to Una First Free Will Baptist Church, PO 283, Una, SC 29378.
