Spartanburg, SC – On June 16, 2022, Curtis Neal Anderson went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, after a courageous battle with cancer. Curtis was born on June 16, 1959 in Nashville, TN. He was the son of James Ewell Anderson (deceased) and Helen Gardner Anderson. Curtis was the brother to Debbie Anderson Gibson and Donald Ray Anderson. Curtis is survived by his wife, Barbara Turon Anderson, daughters Kristine Anderson Lyon (James F Lyon V), Dr. Kathryn Anderson Peacock (Gregory R Peacock), Mary Anderson Chambers (James J Chambers), and son Michael Anderson (Anna Hood Anderson). In February Curtis was blessed with a grandchild, Monica Grace Peacock. Curtis is also survived by his in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Curtis was an Eagle Scout. Curtis graduated from Dupont HS in 1977. He joined the US Navy and served for three years. Curtis had the opportunity to travel to all 50 states and 56 countries. Prior to finishing his naval service, Curtis was accepted and admitted to the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. During his senior year, he served his class as Battalion Commander. He graduated with a two degrees, Marine Engineering and Nautical Science. Curtis earned certification as Third Assistant Engineer and Third Mate. Curtis served the US Naval Reserves for six years upon graduation. In his senior year at the Academy, Curtis met Barbara (Basia) Turon, the love of his life. They were married for 36 years. Curtis earned a Master of Science Degree in Manufacturing Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Professionally, Curtis worked for General Dynamics-Electric Boat, Groton, CT early in his career and then transitioned from manufacturing submergible housing to land based housing with Fleetwood Homes FL, Blue Ridge Log Cabins SC, and All American Homes NC. When the housing market took a downturn, he worked for and managed 2nd shift for Duer Carolina Coil, manufacturing large springs. Later he became the training coordinator. Curtis’s last employment was with BMW as a section leader where Curtis mentored and encouraged the new younger generation as they entered into the workforce. When his children were young, Curtis volunteered his time as the AYSO regional referee administrator. He spent many hours on the telephone Thursday & Friday nights trying to line up referees for Saturday games. Curtis was Michael’s Cub Scout den leader. Later Curtis was the Boy Scout District Commissioner and served on the Eagle Board of Review. Curtis also coordinated an incredible Ten Commandments Hike through downtown Spartanburg where the scouts got to experience many houses of worship. Curtis taught Sunday School for many years at Bethel United Methodist Church, served on the Board of Trustees and as usher. Curtis had many fond memories of playing King Herod in the church’s Return to Bethlehem live drive through Christmas story. Curtis also served on the SC Upstate Workforce Board doing what he could to grow others to become able to participate in the workforce. Prior to his cancer diagnosis, Curtis donated 20 gallons of blood and would encourage those who are able to donate blood as well. Curtis had a servant’s heart and was devoted to the Lord and to those who asked for assistance. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 19th, 6-8PM at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 20th, 4:00PM at Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will be held Tuesday, June 21st, 10:30AM at the M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery, 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC 29621.
