David Thomas Barnes

David T. Barnes Spartanburg - David Thomas Barnes, 88, husband of Annie White Barnes, passed away peacefully at home on November 16, 2017.   He was born on September 7, 1929 in Lumberton, North Carolina to the late Norwood Ashley and Annie Martha Carter Barnes.  He retired from Sherwin-Williams where he was store manager in both Whiteville, NC and Spartanburg, SC. David was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, where he severed as deacon and in many other ways. In addition, David was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years in both Whiteville, NC and Spartanburg, SC serving as President and in other areas.  He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, for dedicated humanitarian services in 1997. David also enjoyed volunteering with Mobile Meals, playing golf, wood crafting and working in his yard which lead him to complete a Master Gardener program. He loved God, his church, family and neighbors and was always there to offer his support without hesitation. In addition to his wife of 65 years, David is survived by a son, Robert Barnes (Patti); daughter in-law, Paula Gately Barnes; granddaughters, Lindsay Meyers (Johnathan), Christal Gordon (Shannon), Emily Gately; grandson, Jason Kykendall; great granddaughters, Ashely, Caroline and Charlotte Meyers, Lyric Gordon; two brothers, Mitchell Barnes (Grace), N.A. Barnes (Judy); numerous nieces, nephews and family along with his caring angel Sophy Lam, who extended love and support throughout his final months. He was preceded in death by a sister, Theta Mae “Sissy” Barnes Lamb; brother, Russell Barnes; and a son, David T. Barnes, Jr. A memorial service will be held in the Sanctuary at Southside Baptist Church on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 PM. A visitation with reception will immediately follow the service. Interment will be at Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery at a later date.
