David Barron (Barry) Jennings of Spartanburg passed away at the age of 72 on September 8, 2024 after a lengthy illness. He was blessed to be at home with his family and beloved pets nearby. Barry announced to his loved ones on the morning of September 7 that “It’s time for me to go home.” And so he did.
Barry was born in Spartanburg and attended Park Hills Elementary School for a time, graduated from Palmetto High School in Miami, Florida and attended Miami Dade Community College.
Barry retired in 2018 after more than 25 years of service as Director of Respiratory Care at Mary Black Hospital.
Barry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cindy (Blankenship) Jennings. They met in Mobile, Alabama where they made their first home and loved life near the water, especially their sailboat excursions. They moved to Spartanburg in 1985 and raised their family of two children, Stephanie Jennings (also of Spartanburg) and David Jennings, Jr. (pre-deceased in 2020). He is also survived by his brother, Robert Jones Jennings III, of Osprey, Florida.
Barry loved the Lord, and missed his church life greatly as his advancing illness made it impossible for him to attend services in person. He adored his wife and children. He looked forward to his retirement for his entire work life and for too brief a time enjoyed unfettered opportunities for gardening, bird watching, golf, mountain picnics, Braves baseball, and Panthers football. He dearly loved family trips to Glacier National Park, the Canadian Rockies, and Walt Disney World, and he enjoyed reminiscing about happiest of shared memories there.
Barry’s graveside service is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, September 15, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Heritage Memorial Gardens in Roebuck, South Carolina. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved son, David, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg - a favorite service organization where Barry served as a meal delivery driver for many years. Or, enjoy a mountain picnic in his memory now during his favorite autumn apple season.
“For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:6-7
