Doris Elizabeth Martin Gettys

Doris Elizabeth Martin Gettys Doris Martin Gettys, 84, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021. She was born on November 20, 1936 in Troutman, NC, to the late Edwin Yates and Sadie Duckworth Martin. Doris graduated high school at 16 and went to Appalachian State Teachers College where she studied business. As a sophomore she was a cheerleader for the JV basketball team which is where she met the freshman, Bob Gettys. Doris Martin married Bob Gettys in July 1954 and they were married for 64 years until he passed in 2019. She worked in NC while he finished his BS and MS degrees. Doris was a retired real estate agent and worked at E.P. Todd Elementary School in Spartanburg, SC while her children were in school. She was a long-time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and was always cooking meals and cakes for others in the church and neighborhood in their time of need. Doris also assisted the Bethlehem Center in raising funds to support those in need. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her step mother, Macie Martin, and her siblings, Jennie Johnston, Hugh, Frank, Melvin and Grady Martin. Mrs. Gettys is survived by her son Todd Gettys and daughter Tracie Sheehan and husband Reggie and grandchildren, Brennan Sheehan and Kelsey Sheehan and husband John. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Harry Martin and wife Debbie, and many loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 22 at 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. We ask that all who join will wear a mask to protect each other and the family understands if you choose not to attend.
