Dr. Michael Wayne Funderburk

March 20, 1954 — December 17, 2020

Michael W. Funderburk, 66, died on Thursday, December 17th, 2020 at his home in Spartanburg surrounded by his loving family. He is mourned by his wife, Jan; his son, Brent and wife, Elizabeth Fildes; his son, Grant and financée, Jennifer Matthews; his sister, Janet Derrick and husband, Paul; his brother in-law, Gary Stroud; his niece, Jessica Ervin and husband, Chip; his nephew, Patrick Stroud; and many other family and friends. Born March 20, 1954 in Waco, TX and raised in Columbia, SC, Michael was the son of Laverne Glover Funderburk and Eunice Catterton Funderburk. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of South Carolina and completed his Doctor of Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Funderburk served the Spartanburg community for over 36 years as an independently practicing orthopaedic surgeon, most recently with Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates. As a total joint specialist, he was a pioneer in performing knee replacements as an outpatient procedure within the state of South Carolina. Above all, he was dedicated to providing exceptional care for his patients and loyal support to his colleagues. Outside of work, his happiest moments were spent traveling with his wife and boys, reading science and history books, and always pursuing a better golf game. Michael will be remembered as an incredibly caring person—for his family and the thousands of people whose lives he touched. To all who loved Michael: Find a passion and pursue it to the fullest, learn to laugh at yourself, dance when there’s live music, and always order the good bottle of wine. To Dad: We love you more than words can say and will carry you in our hearts forever. Out of consideration for the health of others, a private memorial service will be held. The family would be greatly comforted by anyone who knew and loved Michael to share thoughts or special memories at www.JMDunbar.com. In remembrance of Michael, donations can be made to Chapman Cultural Center, 200 E. St. John Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; Shriners Hospitals for Children of Greenville, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605; or to a church or charity of your choice
