Spartanburg, SC- Edward Earl Cubitt, 74, husband of Frances Magarahan “Dodie” Cubitt, died peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Buddy was born in Cedar Spring, SC on September 29, 1942. He is the son of the late Edward Earl Cubitt, Sr., Louise West Cubitt Hodge, and Jim Hodge. A lifelong resident of Spartanburg, Buddy graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1960. He attended Wofford College, graduating in 1966, where he played basketball and tennis for his beloved Terriers. After serving in the US Army National Guard, Buddy began his career at Milliken & Co. and then went on to become a successful businessman where he was a general contractor, real estate developer, and founded Southeastern Roofing Co. and Eagle Metals. He also served on the National Advisory Board of the Polyurethane Foam Roofing Association. For 25 years, Buddy has been a member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent. Prior to that, he was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry, the Building Committee, and as a youth basketball coach. He enjoyed serving as a Past Committee Member for Young Life of Spartanburg. Buddy thrived in his family’s shared experiences through camping, traveling, and sporting activities such as tennis, golf, basketball, and hunting. Many will forever remember him patiently teaching them to water ski at his home-away-from-home at Lake Bowen. Buddy, aka: Big Bass, Defus, Popsy, never met a stranger, and was a dedicated family man who will be remembered as a loyal and genuine friend to all. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Buddy is survived by his daughters, Leigh Cubitt O’Shields (Patrick) and CeCe Cubitt Coleman (Sean); his son, Jamie Cubitt (Jennifer); and eight grandchildren, who are the pride of his life, Cait, Murphy and Payton O’Shields, Ned, Francie, and Drew Coleman, Maggie and Will Cubitt. He is also survived by his siblings, Linda Cubitt Davis (Joe) of Greenville, NC, Anne Cubitt Martin (Jerry), Jamie Hodge (Laura), Mark Hodge (Suzette) of Athens, GA, Penn Hodge (Cynthia) of Atlanta, GA, and Mia Hodge Thompson (Jim); and a boat-load of nieces and nephews! A service honoring his memory will be conducted at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, Monday, April 10th, 2:00PM, officiated by The Reverends J. Edward Morris and Deborah D. Apoldo. The interment will be held immediately following the service. The family will then receive friends in the Parish and Community Life Center.
