Eleanor Elizabeth "Libby" Armstrong

August 8, 1949 — January 8, 2025

Spartanburg, SC

Eleanor Elizabeth “Libby” Armstrong, 75, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. She was born August 8, 1949, in Spartanburg, daughter of the late Marian Sellers Armstrong and Thomas B. Armstrong, Sr.

Libby, nicknamed Sister as well, graduated from Spartanburg High School (Class of 1969) and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Libby was born with cerebral palsy. As a child, herself and her parents were influencers and supporters of helping children born with disabilities. The Armstrong family was featured in many Spartanburg newspaper articles promoting the awareness, need for treatment, care, and education to prepare those children born with physical challenges for public school. Her father designed much of the equipment that was used in the first treatment of handicapped children at General Hospital.

Libby didn’t let any obstacle hold her back from living life to the fullest. She attended day camp at Girl Scout Camp, Spartanburg Public Schools and participated in fundraising events for the Spartanburg Crippled Children’s Society and the construction of The Charles Lea Center. As she grew into a teenager, she started her own gift shop at Armstrong’s Dry Cleaners (her parents’ business), made homemade candy, and began to write poetry to express her love for everything and everyone she encountered in her life. If it happened in Spartanburg… then she wrote a poem about it!

Libby was also featured in the Spartanburg Herald Journal many times, with her mother, earning the recognition and honor as being the Spartanburg Phillies “Number One Fan” missing only two home games in her life, one for her high school graduation and one while on a family vacation. She even went all the way to Florida for Spring training several times. Even after 25 years of care at Mountain View Nursing Home, Libby still loved getting visitors and bringing joy to others. In her last 20 years, Libby enjoyed being the unofficial "assistant teacher” to her best friend Linda Padgett helping teach CNA students.

It is impossible to count how many lives she touched in her 75 years on this earth. Everyone will miss her spit fire personality, her straightforward humor, her ability to make the best of every situation, and her infectious laugh! She will always be remembered, and she will always be loved.

Libby is survived by her sister-in-law, LeRhea Armstrong Stewart (Mike); niece, Chance Armstrong; nephew, Bo Armstrong III; and great-niece, Lula Armstrong. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her loving brother, Thomas B. Armstrong, Jr.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm in the chapel, conducted by Rev. Dale Rawlings. During the service Rev. Rawlings will ask friends and family if they would like to share a personal memory of Libby. Burial in Pacolet Methodist Cemetery will be private.
